A Baltimore-based healthcare provider announced Wednesday the Human Rights Campaign Foundation once again named it a “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality.”

Chase Brexton Health Care achieved a perfect score of 100 points in HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index across categories such as staff training, benefits, patient services and engagement and responsible citizenship. A record 765 healthcare facilities participated in this year’s survey, according to HRC, and Chase Brexton was one of only three Maryland healthcare providers, and 500 nationwide, to earn a perfect score.

The sacrifices of frontline healthcare workers during the global coronavirus pandemic were on the minds of many this year.

“In a year when the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted access to care for so many in our community, this designation means more than ever,” said Sam McClure, executive director of Chase Brexton’s LGBT Health Resource Center, in a press release. “As we renew our focus on health equity, this status reaffirms Chase Brexton’s decades-long commitment to providing welcoming, affirming care.”

HRC President Alphonso David also stated not only were medical facilities that participated in this year’s survey helping to fight a pandemic, but providers were also “making it clear from their participation in the HEI (Healthcare Equality Index) that they stand on the side of fairness and are committed to providing inclusive care to their LGBTQ patients.”

Not only was the pandemic a significant concern for this year’s participants, but the issues of racial inequity and violence raised by continuing protests were also at the forefront of considerations.

“In addition, many have made strong statements on racial justice and equity and are engaging in efforts to address racial inequities in their institutions and their communities,” David said. “We commend all of the HEI participants for their commitment to providing inclusive care for all.”

Chase Brexton serves a diverse community through facilities located in Baltimore, Columbia and other locations throughout Maryland.

HRC previously recognized Chase Brexton in 2017.
