Iowa Democratic Party chair resigns after fiasco with caucuses
The head of the Iowa Democratic Party resigned Wednesday in the aftermath of the debacle that ensued during the caucuses for the 2020 presidential nomination.
In a letter to the Iowa Democratic Party State Central Committee posted to the state party website, Price conceded the process of reporting results on the day of the caucuses “did not work.”
“The fact is that Democrats deserved better than what happened on caucus night,” Price said. “As chair of this party, I am deeply sorry for what happened and bear the responsibility for any failures on behalf of the Iowa Democratic Party.”
Price reiterated his support for an independent review of the caucuses, but concluded his resignation is also necessary.
“I will resign as chair of the Iowa Democratic Party effective upon the election of my replacement,” Price said.
Reports of irregularities in vote counting at the Iowa caucuses, including some precinct leaders using an old system and others using a new system, and a phone application that failed in its job to collect the votes of absentee voters were an among the major issues with the Iowa caucuses.
Although the former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg ended up victorious in terms of winning the most delegates that night, the fiasco essentially the country of being able to declare an openly gay candidate had achieved a historic first of winning a state primary contest.
Price, who’s gay, became Iowa Democratic Party after serving as an LGBTQ rights advocate executive director One Iowa.
In an interview with the Blade before the caucuses, Price said he wanted to take the same approach to rebuilding the Democratic Party after 2016 as he did with rebuilding LGBTQ rights in the state after three justices who ruled for marriage equality in Iowa were voted off the bench.
