Looking back: 50 years of the Blade
Forty years ago, in the summer of 1979, an immigration ban story captivated Blade readers. But it wasn’t the plight of Central American migrants looking for a better life in the United States and being denied entry or, worse, locked in cages.
It was the story of at least 55 lesbians who were denied entry to the country at the Canadian border because they were suspected of traveling to the Michigan Women’s Music Festival. It was believed at the time to have exceeded any previous effort to ban gays and lesbians from entering the United States.
Forty years later and the lead stories today are strikingly similar to this one from the summer of 1979.
