Maryland state Sen. Mary Washington (D-Baltimore) on Tuesday
announced she is running for mayor of Baltimore.

“Our city needs big, positive change,” she said in
a video on her campaign website.

Washington in 2018 became
the first openly LGBTQ person of color elected to the Maryland Senate.
Washington previously represented House District 43 in the Maryland House of
Delegates.

Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh on May 2 resigned
over a scandal over the sale of copies of her “Healthy Holly”
children’s book series to the University of Maryland Medical System while she
served on its board. Current Mayor Bernard “Jack” Young are among the
Democrats who have announced their mayoral campaigns.
